What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a service you can get to make your smile look better than before. The simple procedure removes any accumulated stains and brightens your teeth, eliminating the yellow tones that appear over time.

Tooth stains and discoloration tend to come from:

  • Smoking and tobacco
  • Age
  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Berries and juices
  • Certain medications

While most tooth staining is harmless and not indicative of a dental problem like a cavity, you may want to minimize it for cosmetic reasons. At Qaly Wellness, you can whiten your teeth with a procedure that takes less than an hour.

How does teeth whitening work?

Teeth whitening uses strong products containing ingredients like carbamide peroxide. Peroxides are bleaching agents that penetrate through the outer enamel and underlying dentin layers of your teeth to lift and remove the compounds within them that affect the color of your teeth.

While you can see the same peroxides on the ingredient lists of the whitening pastes and other products you can get at your local drugstore, those products only contain about 3-10% of either of these ingredients. Professional teeth whitening uses up to a 40% concentration of carbamide peroxide.

How long do the results of teeth whitening last?

Teeth whitening results can last for a significant amount of time as long as you take precautions. To make your results last for up to a year, you should avoid the foods and substances that caused the staining in the first place.

While you can’t avoid certain staining medications or aging, you can minimize new stains by:

  • Drinking through a straw
  • Avoiding pigmented foods
  • Avoiding cigarettes and tobacco products
  • Brushing your teeth at least twice daily
  • Flossing between your teeth daily
  • Getting dental cleanings every six months
  • Rinsing your mouth after eating or drinking pigmented substances

Once you see new stains and discoloration on your teeth, you can schedule another professional teeth whitening session at Qaly Wellness to renew your original results.
